Like many of you, my knowledge of Greenpeace begins and ends with that one Seinfeld episode, the one where the NBC executive, so in love with Elaine, freaks out and joins the organization in order to impress her. That is to say I don’t really understand the “point” of the organization, or who appointed it the protector of the environment. But, it is, somehow, so let’s roll with it. Good news for HP and Apple: Greenpeace hates you two a little bit less today! Break out the champagne! Now, what have Apple and HP done to get on Greenpeace’s good side? We brought up Apple’s efforts to placate the environmental organization the other day, but to recap: Apple cut a whole bunch of garbage from its products, and does a lot to make sure its factories are as green as possible. So that’s what Apple did. Meanwhile, over in HP Land, those guys have “[put] a PC on the market that is virtually free of PVC (vinyl plastic) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs).” And who is Greenpeace’s favorite company? That would be Nokia. There’s a whole list of who are, in Greenpeace’s estimation, the greenest companies out there. The worst company? Nintendo! All those nuclear powered Wiis out there! But like I said the other day, I really don’t know too many people who buy things based on their environmental impact. Can I afford it, and does it work well? That’s what I figure most people are thinking when they walk into the mall.
Bad news, sports fans. Well, to be specific, DJ Hero fans. Anyhow, it looks like you won’t be able to use the turntable controller on any other video game. Why you’d want to use the turntable when playing, say, Street Fighter IV, I don’t know. This is really only applicable if you had planned to buy DJ Hero, then buy Scratch: The Ultimate DJ without its turntable. One of the DJ Hero devs told Destructoid that any game that could use the turntable would necessarily be a ripoff. Yes, because Rock Band and Guitar Hero are two totally different games… But yeah, the turntable only works on DJ Hero. You don’t send me flowers!
The “WiFi Body Scale” from French company Withings records your weight and BMI and automatically uploads it to a secure website, which would be a lot easier to make fun of if it weren’t for Wii Fit, which does that stuff but doesn’t upload it anywhere. People made fun of Wii Fit at first and then it went on to become the most popular Wii game in the history of the universe, so it stands to reason that this scale may become the most popular scale in the history of scales. Or it may not. You never can tell. And it wouldn’t be a serious product if there wasn’t also an iPhone app for keeping track of your progress as well, right? Well, there is. And get this: up to eight different people can keep track of their weight on the same scale. The scale even knows who’s who right when they step on the scale. Maybe it knows each person by the amount of meat in their feet. Science! The scale costs $159 and is available at Withings.com (and apparently Amazon, although it’s not in stock there at the moment). Yes, that’s a lot for a scale but even at $159 it offers far more value than the $55 Yay! Scale from earlier this week. WiFi Body Scale [Withings.com]
The timeshifting stat is important to networks because advertisers look at it as well. They would much rather give networks money whose programs are watched live and therefore isn’t a way for viewers to fast forward through commercials. To be honest though, only about half the time I watch something off my TiVo do I skip the commercials. IDK why, maybe I’m just that lazy.
Amazon’s current wireless hardware provider, Qualcomm, seems to be the one that will handle the The Kindle is coming in as a bit of a late contender, with Sony’s and Border’s ebook readers already available in England since June. But that’s all about to change. TimesOnline called the Kindle “the best eBook reader in the world.” Well, at least now it’ll be the best in the US and Britain.
AT&T teamed up with TerreStar to release the new phone, called the “Genus”. The new smartphone will combine both standard cell phone connectivity (via the AT&T network) and the option to use the satellite connection. The new phone will be aimed at users in the US, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, and will switch between the satellite network and the cellular network as needed. No word on pricing as of yet, however the phone is expected to be released sometime during first quarter 2010. [via Reuters]
The 7-inch model sports a 800 x 480 screen and runs $120. But for $140, you can snag the 9-inch model that can do 1024 x 600. Or for $160, you could get the 9-inch model with a little webcam. Both models are powered by USB and can be used either in landscape or portrait mode.
(These guys are excited that they might soon be able to buy the Sprint Touch Pro 2 without declaring bankruptcy.)
Good news, everyone! According to some dude on the internet who heard it from another dude -- and a bunch of people who have already managed to get the deal -- the Sprint Touch Pro 2 is going to see a huge price drop as early as tomorrow.
Wouldn't it be great to have more time to saunter through duty-free shops? The question is would you pay a yearly subscription to skip airport security lines. If there were such a service, many would probably answer ‘yes'. Well, such a service may exist very soon. The New York Times writes about the service once offered by entrepreneur Steven Frill. After the September 11 terrorist attacks, he founded a company to offer a service that allowed its customers to pass through an express security lane at participating airports. 250,000 flyers signed up to receive a biometric card, manufactured by Verified Idendity Pass, Inc., which were accepted at 20 airports.

The worldwide recession looks to have taken a bite out of sales of Intel’s Classmate PC, a computer that was supposed to bring the power of, um, computers to the developing world. Since governments have been devoting resources (read: money) to fighting the recession, they have less money to buy “superfluous” items like computers for kids. Not that it really matters to the Classmate PC’s producers. Orders and margins were already on the low side, so if governments decide not to buy ‘em in bulk anymore, meh, no big deal. Business-wise, at least. Of course, as Bobby Kennedy once said, you can’t only measure a country’s wealth in raw dollars and cents: what about the quality of children’s “education, or their quality of play”? Spend a few dollars on some computers today, then in a few years you’ve got a better educated citizenry to deal with. That’s the goal, at least. Yesterday, September 29, Valve released new downloadable content (DLC) for its popular zombie-infused cooperative first-person shooter, Left 4 Dead. Dubbed "Crash Course," the new update brings a new campaign, taking place between the events of "No Mercy" and "Death Toll," and features fresh locations, dialogue, refined item spawning and more. "Crash Course DLC is here! Find out what happens to Bill, Zoey, Louis, and Francis after their rooftop helicopter rescue in the No Mercy campaign." The DLC is available to PC gamers for free via Steam and to Xbox 360 owners at a cost of 560 MS Points on the Xbox Live Marketplace.

We have Internet access in planes now (Virgin America offers it in the US, for example), so why not on boats? That’s what one of Japan’s biggest telecommunications companies, KDDI, thought and now gives us a device that will allow ship passengers to enjoy wireless broadband Internet while being out on the water. The device was developed by KDDI’s R&D arm KDDI R&D Laboratories and is still in prototype mode. Passengers will be able to access the web when a vessel is close enough to land to connect to cell phones or to pick up signals from WiMAX networks. When it’s farther from the shore, the device will use satellite signals instead. There is no picture of the prototype yet, but KDDI aims at commercializing the device by next year. The company hopes to attract interest from commercial vessel and cruise ship operators. Via Nikkei [registration required, paid subscription] |
