The company previously raised $5M in April of 2008, bringing their total funding to just over $10.6M. Formerly Electricross, Zero Motorcycles specializes in high performance electric street and dirt bikes--the Tesla of the motorcycle industry so to speak. webOS 1.3.5 for Palm Pre starts rolling out – Still no video recording.

Pre-toting people around the Internets have been hoping and praying that Palm would add video recording support to the Pre ever since the device launched. When Palm's CEO Jon Rubinstein mentioned that webOS 1.3.5 would be hitting the Pre in just a few days, people started getting antsy; surely this would be the one that brought video, right? No such luck. While it does fix a handful of issues (most importantly, they've upped the number of apps you can have installed at once), the lack of video isn't one of them.

Ballmer Says You're Fired" which contained a video of an alleged former Microsoft employee that had been fired for not being enthusiastic about Bing during a company meeting. It was claimed that Steve Ballmer, Microsoft's own CEO had laid-off the man himself. As it turns out the whole thing is a hoax and Frank Shaw, Corporate Communications at Microsoft confirmed this in a comment on the Mashable post. "Please mark this as funny but not true" writes Shaw who also notes "this is clearly a hoax and you should mark it as such in the headline".

Operation Chokehold aims to take down AT&T

No smartphone users in the world approved of AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega's remarks about iPhone users hogging the network's bandwidth. His statement permeated the hearts of every tech savvy, phone loving user worldwide. Fake Steve Jobs (Dan Lyons), who many of you may follow, has decided to stick it to the man. He is calling on all iPhone users to bring AT&T's network to a halt. Here are the details: Subject: Operation Chokehold On Friday, December 18, at noon Pacific time, we will attempt to overwhelm the AT&T data network and bring it to its knees.

Operation Chokehold will blow up AT&T on Friday

choke-hold-defenseFake Steve is rustling some feathers this week with his Operation Chokehold, a planned bit of corporate disobedience against AT&T. He’s telling iPhone users to go nuts with the data on Friday, December 18, just to show AT&T’s CEO De La Vega, the man who suggested education would encourage users not to use his network so much, what uneducated users really can do to his preciously twee airwaves.

The call to action:

Subject: Operation Chokehold
On Friday, December 18, at noon Pacific time, we will attempt to overwhelm the AT&T data network and bring it to its knees. The goal is to have every iPhone user (or as many as we can) turn on a data intensive app and run that app for one solid hour. Send the message to AT&T that we are sick of their substandard network and sick of their abusive comments. THe idea is we’ll create a digital flash mob. We’re calling it in Operation Chokehold. Join us and speak truth to power!

I would do it, obviously, but I’m overseas right now and if I turned on data I could buy De La Vega a new yacht with the roaming charges.

Now I’m all for a bit of fun, obviously, but isn’t it ironic that this is what passes for political action these days? Our forefathers went to union meetings, we use Pandora all day. Oh well. At least AT&T can’t hire the Pinkertons to bust our heads.

The Sony motion controller is named “Gem”?

sony-motion-controller
Here’s what we know. John Riccitiello, the CEO of EA, spoke yesterday at the UBS 37th Annual Global Media Conference and said this,

“In the coming year, both Sony and Microsoft have announced new controllers. Motion sensor controls, Natal and Gem, these are likely to bring new consumers into the marketplace”.

Kind of sounds like he knows what he’s talking about, eh?

Of course Sony isn’t stating anything, but the company really should. We need something to call their motion controller. Microsoft codenamed its system Project Natal, which makes it easy to write about. Without a codename for Sony’s system, we’re forced to call it something like the motion-wand-wiimote-clone-with-the-blue-ball thing.

So, Sony, can we just call the thing Gem and get on with it?

Twitter inventor introduces free card payment system, Square

Twitter creator and former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has introduced a new card payment system named Square. Square was unveiled last week. The payment system uses a small scanner that plugs into the headset port on mobiles and PCs and allows retailers to read the magnetic stripe information from credit cards. Users make a purchase by swiping the credit or debit card through the reader. Card owners can then use touch screen mobiles such as the iPhone or Android devices to sign for goods. Square creator Dorsey donned the stage at Le Web 09 this morning to confirm that the small card scanner will be made available for free.

Seagate finally shows up at the solid state drive party with an enterprise offering

pulsarplain_highres

Seagate, the big huge hard drive company, has just now officially announced its first ever solid state drive. The press release title says “Seagate Introduces Its First Solid State Drive: Pulsar” and above the title it says “December 08, 2009.” To be fair, Seagate CEO Bill Watkins hasn’t been keen on solid state drives, saying a little over a year ago that his company wasn’t really considering the solid state market aside from these enterprise-level drives that have just been announced.

So enterprise-class SSDs: great. But will we see consumer offerings from Seagate? As prices continue to fall and demand rises, it’d be foolish for the company to not eventually get into the consumer SSD market. Just don’t plan on anyone with a Seagate nametag showing up to the party before most of the other guests.

Ubisoft: 10 games for Natal, 4-5 for Sony’s magic wand in first six months

ubi
It’s too early to say whether Natal and the PS3 wand are going to be as fun as everyone hopes, but at least it’s not going to be a dry launch. In fact, it seems like developers are lining up around the block to take a crack at the new control methods. I don’t know about you, but I find that refreshing. Just as long as it’s not Halo Natal.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said in an earnings call that the company would have, barring possible changes in timing, 10 games available for Natal within the first six months of its release. He also said that they’d have 4-5 games for Sony’s motion controller, whatever it’s really called (can’t just be “wand”) in the same time frame.

While I wouldn’t say we’re about to see a renaissance in gaming or anything like that, I think it’s good that these new peripherals are coming out deep into the consoles’ lifespans. Unlike the Wii at launch, developers have a clear idea of what the 360 and PS3 are capable of, and so their real focus will be on gameplay. I’m guessing that the first batch of games will consequently be of higher quality than early Wii titles.

It’s still not simple which system to go for, however, if you’re still wavering like me. New Super Mario Bros Wii and Excitebike World Rally are enough to make me get the Wii, yet XBLA has so many indie titles — and serious, super-deep games like Demon’s Souls make the PS3 an excellent proposition as well. Well, I don’t even have a TV on which to play these games, so I should probably slow my roll.

Do video game publishers misrepresent their games in order to get lower ratings?

ratings

There’s some sort of video game developer conference going on in Motreal this week (titled, to use its full name, the Montreal International Game Summit), and an interesting charge was just levied there. The CEO of A2M (the company that developed Wet), Rémi Racine, said that some game publishers will go out of their way to deceive the ESRB in order to get a lower rating for their games. You know how Hollywood tries hard to make sure the summer blockbusters are rated no higher than PG-13 in order to ensure a large audience? Same thing with video games, apparently. Why release an M-rated game, and know that your limiting your potential audience, when you can eek out with a T rating?

Of course, this is the opinion of one man, and not to be taken as the gospel truth. But what he said makes sense, at least on the surface:

As a developer who has worked with a lot of different publishers, we’re aware of many that have tried to cheat the rating. They say to the ERSB that it’s a Teen rating rather than an Mature to try and sell more; you can do this just by sending them a video that doesn’t show the most violent stuff and then you’ll get the rating that you want rather than the rating you should get.

Again, we have no way of knowing if this guy is speaking truthfully, but it doesn’t seem too far-fetched. Of course, then you run into all sorts of issues that I can just picture some grand-standing politician exploiting i.e. the ESRB has failed us, so we need tighter regulations.
