Some rumors are swirling regarding a possible “slim” version of the Xbox 360. And why not? The console being sold is largely the same as one they were selling… wow, is it more than four years ago now? Of course, the ones they sell now run a little cooler, and don’t have an enormous failure rate, so there’s that. And with the pressure on from the PS3 Slim and… well, a black version of the Wii, Microsoft probably wants to be one of the cool kids with the console revisions.

The pictures are purportedly of the new motherboard, and show a combined processor and graphics unit, a generally smaller size, and a SATA connector instead of a proprietary one, suggesting the new hard drive will be internal.

SquareTrade, proprietors of extended warranties, just released a 3-year study that sheds some light on the reliability of laptops and netbooks. The main conclusion that 1 in 3 notebooks fail within three year should come as no surprise. After all, they are portable computers that get banged around. It’s the nature of the beast. However, the study does reveal some other interesting tid-bits, including a handy graph the shows the malfunction rate of the top nine laptop manufacturers.
Feel free to read the whole study here, but here are the main points.
- 31% of notebooks suffer a total failure rate before 3 years
- Netbooks fail 20% more often than laptops
- 5.8% of netbooks malfunction within the first 12 months
- Asus has the best 3-year malfunction rate at 15.6%
- HP has the worst 3-year malfunction rate at 25.6%
- You might want a warranty

According to research carried out by warranty provider SquareTrade, almost a quarter of Microsoft's Xbox 360s fail within two years, leaving it behind the PS3, and the console which proved to be most reliable: the Nintendo Wii. The research was carried out on 16,000 consoles, and all of those were brand new. In addition, failures which were due to accidents were not included. According to the report, the Xbox 360 has a failure rate of 23.7%, over a time span of two years. The PS3 has a failure rate of 10% over two years, but the Wii beats all of them with a considerably smaller 2.7% failure rate. Read full story...

So, the other week Game Informer published the results of a reader poll that found the Xbox 360 has a 54 percent failure rate. In typical PR fashion, Microsoft sent along the following statement to TG Daily defending the awesomeness of the Xbox 360 console.
“Microsoft stands behind the Xbox 360 as a superior entertainment console with one of the best warranties in the industry,” TG Daily was told by a Microsoft spokesperson. “We are constantly improving the design, manufacture and performance of the console through extensive testing of potential sources of any problems. Xbox 360 is pleased to maintain the title of ‘most played console’ and the vast majority of Xbox 360 customers have enjoyed a terrific gaming and entertainment experience since their first day, and continue to, day in and day out.”
