Now here’s a good idea. In a way, anyhow — when was the last time you really needed little 3D letters? Doesn’t matter, it’s still cool. This font, if you print it large enough, lets you cut out the letters, fold down and glue the tabs where indicated, and boom, papercraft letters!
I can see this being useful in a grade school environment, or for decorating a twee apartment. Who lives here? Clearly Zoe, since her name is hanging from the ceiling in foot-high letters.
The name of the font is “Punched Out” and it’s available for free from dafont.com, which looks like it’s got a lot more cool fonts. Time to browse.
It’s amusing to me how sometimes how I’ll be considering a particular subject and then randomly find a DIY project related to that subject. For example, I’m been considering getting a medium format film camera, just for the experience of shooting in that format. Apparently I’m not the only one, because Peter J at the Medium Format Camera Project has been building his very own camera.
Peter J’s project is about 80% completed, but its looking really sharp so far. Amazingly, it’s assembled from cardboard, glue, some ground glass, and Legos. It looks like he used a purchased lens, but the rest of it was assembled by hand. I hope he’s able to finish the project, I look forward to seeing the results (and maybe building one for myself).
The future, ladies and gentlemen. ThinkGeek has invented a tee shirt with a built-in playable guitar that uses a magnetic pick and included miniature amp to belt out any and all major cords. There’s a drum shirt, too, in case you’re more into rhythm.
So it’s up to you: a $30 tee shirt with a built-in guitar or this $95 tee shirt from J.Crew that looks like it was made by a glue-huffing toddler. Seems like a pretty easy choice.
Here’s a video just in case you’re still not convinced:
A big thank you to everybody for filling our tips-at-crunchgear-dot-com inbox with wonderful, unique, and newsworthy items. Here are a few that we missed.
Hi Tony,
Let me just make sure that you and I are huffing the same glue here. As I understand it, you’re looking for some advice on how to spend two years of your life similar to how an average person spends two years of their own life?
What have YOU been doing up until this point? Whatever it is, keep doing it. The average person’s life is pretty mundane and boring and it sounds like you’re looking to fit in with the rest of us.
As for activities to avoid: anything that has to do with poo from any species, print journalism, or a combination of the two. You’re pretty much safe with anything else.
Hi Cynthia,
The title of your e-mail intrigues me and, although I can certainly appreciate the idea of loving someone from the inside out, you really glossed over that whole “what I am” thing.
I probably don’t need to ask, seeing as though you’re identifying yourself as someone named Cynthia while the sender’s name is John Silver. Sure I’m flattered, maybe even a bit curious, but I’ve had bad luck with my profile at (singles). If you don’t mind though, I have a friend named Tony who’s looking for at least a two-year relationship. I can pass your e-mail along to him if you like. Just take it slow, he doesn’t want to rush into anything.

Guess what the Lenovo fairy just brought us! This is the new Lenovo S10-2, a $399 ultralight with a 10-inch screen, Atom processor, and six-cell battery. It weighs 2.2 pounds and looks pretty sassy.
The S10-2 has three USB port, VGA-out, and bog standard audio-in and -out. Most interesting is the delicate polka dot styling on the laptop’s cover, perfect for nights on the beach or a weekend at the glue refinery.
We’ll do a little testing of this laptop this week - look for our bonanza netbook/ultralight blow-out shortly - and get back to you on performance and fun-itude.
Old NES controller, meet iPhone. An enterprising individual over on the iPhonefr.com forums (careful, everything is in French!) has turned one of the most iconic controllers of all time into something that holds one of the most iconic electronic gadgets of the present day.
It actually doesn’t look like it’d be all that complicated to produce. Clear out the innards of the controller, make a little slit for the iPod connector to fit into, and glue everything in place. Voila, as the French say.
If you’re sick — SICK! — of all these new Apple fanatics and you want to show them all that you’ve been a diehard fan since the early days, even sticking by the company through Newton and Pippin, then this thumb drive made out of an old Apple keyboard is for you.
Ingredients: an old Apple keyboard, a thumb drive you’re willing to destroy, some workbench-y tools and whatnot, time.
The basic process then involves gutting a regular thumb drive, carving out a notch for it to fit into inside an old Return key, and grabbing the Apple logo from another area of the keyboard. Sand, cut, glue, solder, slice, etc. and you’ll eventually have yourself a nice retro USB thumb drive.
