16-port USB hub is a little more tasteful than those other ones

When 10 hubs is just too few, and 24 is a few too many, and 80 is way too many… have I got the USB hub for you! They just added these things to stock at ThinkGeek, and unlike the other hubs we’ve seen recently, this one actually looks pretty nice. It’s got kind of an Apple vibe, but obviously still ran run with the PC big boys on sheer geekiness.

Thing is, it costs $160. Personally… I’d rather buy myself a nice steak every night for a week. Or teriyaki every day for a month. Yeah, I’m going with that one. But if you can’t control your buying finger, go ahead and pick one up.

Behold the 24-port USB hub!

If you saw the post yesterday about the 10-port USB hub and thought to yourself, “We’re getting there but I still need MORE!” then here’s your answer. It’s a 24-port USB hub. If 24 ports isn’t enough for you then I give up.

This one’s a $70 affair, which seems like a lot for a USB hub until you remember that you’ve now got 24 ports to work with. It actually doesn’t look that insanely large, either.

When only ten USB ports will do, there’s this ten-port USB hub

254-809 How many USB ports is too many? Not ten, apparently. Meritline.com is selling a ten-port USB 2.0 hub for an actually-reasonable price of $26 with free shipping.

Short of actually plugging this thing into a computer, you know what else it might be good for? A charging station for a large family or small office. Since just about every portable gadget and cell phone is rechargeable via USB nowadays, you could place this in a common area and use it to juice up all your devices.

You’ll have to figure out how to manage the rat’s nest of cables that’ll undoubtedly ensue but, hey, with great charging comes great responsibility.

UBoard desk shelf features three-port USB hub, cup holder

UB01

Cup holder, eh? I like cups. Who doesn’t? If you constantly find yourself in need of a 22 inch wide glass shelf with a built-in three-port USB hub and cup holder attachment, then today is your lucky day.

The $50 UBoard is pitched as a “USB Multiboard For Your Keyboard & Office Life.” I don’t know about you, but I like to keep my keyboard life and my office life separate. It’s hard to do, but it’s important to me.

The tempered glass shelf can hold up to 33 pounds, but the product page recommends that you should not sit or stand on it. I agree, in principle.

Make your own Street View rig for fun and profit

1238261

If you suddenly find yourself with $300 to burn, an old laptop, and too much time on your hands this weekend, I might suggest that you build a DIY Google Street View-style rig for your car. That’s what West Point student Roy Ragsdale did for his “disruptive technologies” class. And if someone at West Point does it, it’s okay for you to do it.

The gear consists of eight Microsoft LifeCam NX-6000 webcams, a couple D-Link USB hubs, a GPS receiver, and an old laptop running Ubuntu. Roy whipped up a script that made each of the cameras take a 1280×1024 snapshot every 20 seconds and then later had each 8-pack of photos stitched together to form a panoramic picture. He was able to grab photos while driving over 60 miles per hour that were “perfectly clear and on par with those available on Google Street View.”

Sounds fun, I guess. Sort of. There’s always the actual Google Street View, too, which involves keeping your $300 and far less driving. Well done for a class project, though.

Portable USB hub features solar charging

solar

Here we have a combination USB hub, rechargeable battery extender, and solar doodad in one. The 2.5- by 2.5-inch square features an internal lithium ion battery that can be charged via sunlight or AC power and then hooked up to your dying cell phone to provide some extra juice on the go.

It’s also a 4-port USB hub, should you need to plug in a bunch of thumb drives as the above photo suggests. The real draw here is the solar recharging, though, and the hub comes with connector tips for Nokia, LG, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson phones, along with a Mini USB connector for Motorola and HTC phones (or anything that charges via Mini USB).

It only costs $20 but there’s no mention of the battery’s actual capacity or how long it takes the sun to charge it up fully.
