Looks like Boxee will release an iPhone App to control its upcoming set-top box, developed jointly with D-Link. The App will be on display at CES next week. Oh, God, CES is next week. With any luck Las Vegas will mysteriously disappear à la “Lost” before the show starts. That would truly be ideal. Maybe now is when I can ask, publicly, what’s the big deal with Boxee? Am I mistaken in calling it a port of XBMC? Am I mistaken in calling XBMC a re-brand of Xbox Media Center? Am I mistaken in calling Xbox Media Center a re-launch of Xbox Media Player, which I dutifully downloaded from Xbins on Efnet back in the day? And wasn’t Xbox Media Player merely the Xbox port of mplayer? So Boxee = mplayer with a fancy skin and a few plugins. (As if skins and plugins are exclusive to Boxee!) Obviously people like the idea, but I don’t understand all the hype. Following up on an earlier announcement, the Boxee website has revealed that it will be partnering with the hardware manufacturer D-Link to bring the open source media center to set-top boxes in users' homes. The Boxee Box was unveiled at a special event yesterday in Brooklyn, where details regarding the project's official beta were also discussed. The device, pictured below, has the distinctive appearance of a cube half submerged into the surface the unit is placed upon, and it features a number of ports for connecting display and sound devices, but no CD or DVD drive. Instead, the box's primary interface for removable media is a front-facing SD card slot.

BBC iPlayer in Windows 7 Media Center looks like the real thing, in fact you could mistake it for being an official add-in made by the BBC except it's made by a third-party developer who "spent the weekend working on some nicer iplayer plugins" for themselves. The developer, nicknamed "ddfczm", posted a download link and information over at The Australian Media Center Community. The add-in allows you to browse through the various iPlayer content available by highlights, channels, categories and search. Video is streamed from the WMV versions that the BBC supplies.

Though he refers to it as a "Boxee Box" in the subject of the post, Ronen declined to release details or specifications, which he said will be available at an official event to be held on December 7th. Based on open-source technology first designed to bring media center capabilities to the original Xbox, Boxee is currently available as an open alpha for machines running Windows, Linux, and OSX.

I'm sure this will be fixed in a matter of days - if not hours - but as of right now it means a ride on the Failboat to Sad Trombone Town. That's right: this update destroys the only thing that makes Apple TV usable and good.
Also, as an added bonus, Apple TV firmware 3.0 is insignificant. It adds Internet radio to the package and improves the UI. It also adds Genius playlists. My cup, as they say, runneth over.
UPDATE - Post has been update with instructions for downgrading to firmware 2.4.
To repeat, do not upgrade your Apple TV to 3.0 if you’re running hacked ATV plugins like XBox Media Center or Boxee. I’m sure this will be fixed in a matter of days – if not hours – but as of right now it means a ride on the Failboat to Sad Trombone Town. That’s right: this update destroys the only thing that makes Apple TV usable and good. Also, as an added bonus, Apple TV firmware 3.0 is insignificant. It adds Internet radio to the package and improves the UI. It also adds Genius playlists. My cup, as they say, runneth over. But I do have Internet radio! Welcome to 2001, Apple TV! When I’m old and bitter I can listen to AM talk radio from all over the world! That said, you can easily hack any 2.x AppleTV with the ATVUSB Creator, a Windows or OS X app that takes the hard work out of hacking. You just run it and insert the resulting USB key into the Apple TV. A few minutes later you have Boxee and XMBC installed. We also have an older How-To here. For now, keep your eye on this and this for updates. I’ll do the same. Together, we can fight this menace. Earlier this month Neowin reported on some potential Windows 7 adverts. Last night Microsoft began airing these adverts. The first ever TV commercial originally appeared earlier this month on US TV stations. In the new round of Windows 7 commercials the focus is on features. The first, named "Personalization: Your PC, Your Style" demonstrates the customisation features in Windows 7. Next up is an advert focussing on Aero Shake, perhaps a less used feature of the new Windows 7. The advert shows American footballers and shakes away the clutter around them. A Third advert shows off the features of Xbox Media Center and the Xbox 360 extender.

The design of the SoundWare XS 5.1 speakers is very understated and allows for placement at those special angles home media people seem to love so much. At $500 they’re in the budget-midrange area, so they’re worth a look if you’re fixing up a room but don’t want to overwhelm it with big chunky speakers. They’ll be available in July 2009. Wait, that’s now! Boxee is holding an event in San Francisco tonight to declare a winner of its App Dev Challenge, in which third-parties created apps for the media platform. But the real winner tonight will be Boxee, which is also announcing a boatload of new features and functionality for its media center software — none bigger than a version of Boxee for Windows, finally.
While many developers go the other way, Boxee started as a Mac and Linux product first. But obviously, Windows PCs are the vast majority of the machines out there. "This is huge being able to serve the rest of the computer market," Boxee CEO Avner Ronen tells us. And that's undoubtedly an understatement, given the success Boxee has already had minus all those Windows users.
