Google's a company that's continually trying new things. It's braved the world of browsers, mobile phones, and, soon to be, operating systems. It still doesn't forget about its roots, though: search. The company has unveiled its implementation of real time search, which will be going live soon. As written about on Google's blog, the company claims its doing this as it does its best to bring consumers the latest, real time news, in an easy-to-read way. Now, whenever you search for a topic, you'll be able to see live updates from sites like FriendFeed and Twitter, enabling you to see what others have to say about what you're interested in (of course, you'll get updates from news sites, also).

Acer, no stranger to netbooks with Google-backed operating systems, is hoping to have the first Chrome OS netbook on the market by the second half of next year, according to DigiTimes. The company has apparently been developing the machine since the middle of this year. Acer’s JT Wang “expressed his confidence that the company will be the first vendor to launch [a] Chrome-based netbook in the market during a recent interview with Digitimes.” The second half of 2010 is light years away as far as technology development is concerned but, hey, now you have something to talk about at your next dinner party. Android is still in its infancy in Japan where most domestic makers still stick with their proprietary operating systems, with basically no one outside the geek community knowing what it is. But things are changing slowly. Last week, SoftBank (the country's third biggest cell phone carrier) announced an Android-powered phone for next year when the company announced their new models for the next months.
And yesterday, Sharp announced at an event in Tokyo it will roll out a yet to be specified number of Android-based handsets as early as the first half of next year. Sharp commands the biggest market share of all eight cell phone makers in Japan so this is very good news for the Google OS in what is the most advanced mobile society in the world.

I’ll let you do the math on this one but needless to say, it ends up being a pretty good deal for a multi-computer household. You may also consider getting the three-pack from Staples and using one of the store’s relatively ubiquitous “$30 off a purchase of $150 or more” coupons if you happen to have one of them in your possession. That’s an even better deal, although you’ll need to track down the coupon of course. As far as combining your love for keeping your mousing hand warm with your love for hamburgers is concerned, it looks like there are really only two options right now. One: you could buy this “Hamburger Warming Mouse Pad” for $15. Two: you could cook up a gigantic hamburger and stick your hand inside it. Keep in mind that you’d also have to stick your mouse inside it, so make sure to check with your workplace regulations to make sure that’s okay. I love hamburgers, don’t get me wrong. But they’re made for eating. So I would personally opt for this USB hamburger warming pad for use during the cold winter mornings and then cooking an actual hamburger for eating in the cold winter afternoons. The warming pad is “made of high quality wool and cotton” and – oh, good – it’s compatible with both Windows and Mac platforms. Because, you know, sometimes USB hand warmers can be very particular about which operating systems they work with. The Hamburger Warming Mouse Pad features a maximum warmth of 140° F, which is insane. Although on the plus side, you could probably cook an actual hamburger in there at lunchtime. The performance test ran using software available on both operating systems including iTunes 9, QuickTime, Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare and Cinebench R10; testing multimedia multitasking, shutdown time, boot time and iTunes encoding. The laptop used was a 15-inch MacBook Pro with 2.5Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB of RAM with a 512MB Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT video card. Snow Leopard was installed on a stock 320GB hard drive (Hitachi model HTS543232L9SA0), while Windows 7 64-bit was installed on a 320GB Western Digital Scorpio Blue (model WD3200BEVT).

Calculator hobbyists who blogged about the modification of the software included on Texas Instruments (TI) programmable calculators have been sent letters from TI demanding they remove the material. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), who campaign for digital rights, privacy, and freedom of speech responded to TI in a letter yesterday. According to a press release by the EFF, the hobbyists and researchers reverse-engineered the signature check that prevents unapproved operating systems from being loaded on to TI programmable graph calculators, allowing modifications to be made which could add functionality to the calculator in question: the TI 83 Plus calculator.

What if the desktop on your computer was just like your actual desktop? That’s the core idea behind BumpTop, a really nice looking graphical overlay for Windows-based operating systems. But as cool as BumpTop looked, you still had to use your mouse and keyboard to manipulate it. As I made clear yesterday, I want those to die. So good news for me today: BumpTop is adding multi-touch support. And the result is awesome.
When we think of multi-touch right now, most of us think of the iPhone. But really, with such a small screen, there are only so many gestures you can do. Multi-touch BumpTop greatly expands that roster, and includes several gestures that it claims to have patents for. Basically, they have gestures that use all of you fingers, and both hands, and even the side of hands. You can “lasso” things, “shove” them, “scrunch” them, and “crop” them.

Last week we showed the highlights and 10+ minutes of video footage of an exclusive hour-long TechCrunch interview with Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.
Now for the rest of that interview. The video was just a teaser. I spoke with Ballmer for another 50 minutes on the record, doing a deeper dive into five key areas of Microsoft’s product strategy: Big Opportunities, Operating Systems/Browsers, Mobile, Search and Developers.
This post is about big opportunities at Microsoft beyond their dual cash cows of Windows and Office. Microsoft generates around $20 billion a year in pre-tax profit, and spends nearly $10 billion on research and development. When Microsoft thinks about increasing (or sustaining) those profits, they have to think big. And they have to think long term.
Ballmer says he thinks about new business opportunities in three buckets: expanding current businesses (short run), building things from scratch (long run), and big aquisitions (short cuts).

Head’s up to any of y’all looking to upgrade to Snow Leopard this weekend (that’s my plan, along with installing Windows 7). It’s not exactly a surprise, but some applications may be a little wonky with the new operating system, and this Web site has a list of what’s what. Apparently World of Warcraft has some minor issues, and you’ll need to upgrade popular FTP application Cyberduck to a new beta to get it to work with 10.6. There also seems to be some issues with Growl and Google Gears, so best to consult the list before you zap away plain ol’ Leopard forever. Also, if I may, the Guardian has the best review of Snow Leopard I’ve read thus far, so be sure to read it when you have a few free minutes. That is all. 2009.08.28, 04:00.04 pm | Tags: Apple, beta, cyberduck, free minutes, gears, Google, google gears, guardian, Headline, installing windows, new operating system, operating systems, snow leopard, surprise, wonky, world of warcraft | Category: CrunchGear, Uncategorized | Comments are closed

Microsoft's Chief Executive Officer, Steve Ballmer, dismissed Google's idea of two operating systems claiming "I don't really know what's up at Google" in a QnA session on Tuesday. CNET News reports that Ballmer's comments came at the Worldwide Partner Conference where he was addressing questions about Google's Chrome OS during an on-stage talk with Fortune's Geoff Colvin. "First of all, I will be respectful," he said. "Who knows what this thing is. To me, the Chrome OS thing is highly interesting (in) that it won't happen for a year and a half and they already announced an operating system." He continued to claim that he did not understand why Google required two operating systems, Android and Chrome OS.
