Gmail on Nexus One

Not only does the just-announced Nexus One have a beautiful display, snappy processor, and five megapixel camera complete with flash and geotagging, but you can also buy it online with or without a service plan. Plus, it runs Android 2.1, which adds a couple of new features to the native Gmail application:
  • Quick contact badge: Press the contact status icon within Gmail, and a handy box shows all of the ways you can reply to a contact — including email, chat, SMS, and Facebook.
  • Voice input: Swipe the keyboard, then just speak to select contacts or write an email, complete with punctuation. Period!

Nexus One also features the Gmail updates of Android 2.0, including:
  • Multiple Gmail accounts: Sync multiple accounts to the same device and switch between them without leaving the app.
  • Undo: A handy 'undo' link makes it easier to retrieve messages when you hit archive or delete by mistake. (Note: you can't yet undo send as you can with the desktop version of Gmail).

AS1410_highres

Can you believe it? Acer has yet another 11.6-inch ultraportable notebook on the way. Notice I didn’t say netbook, since this one technically has a low-voltage Intel Celeron SU2300 processor running at 1.2GHz.

Features include the aforementioned processor, an 11.6-inch screen at 1366×768, Windows 7 Home Premium, Intel GMA 4500MHD, 2GB of RAM, 160GB hard drive, card reader, a/b/g/n wireless, webcam, multi-touch trackpad, three USB ports, HDMI out, 3.08 body weight, and a six-cell battery good for up to six hours before needing to be recharged.

Various configurations will be available “at leading retailers this holiday season” with a starting MSRP of $400 – no word on a firm launch date yet, however.

Here’s the full press release:

New Acer AS1410 Series Brings Style and Affordability to Ultraportable Computing

11.6-inch Notebook Lightens the Load for Mobile Users Who Want to Enjoy Social Networking, Video and Productivity Applications on the Go; Available for Just $399

SAN JOSE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Bringing affordability to the ultraportable notebook platform, Acer America today announced the new Acer Aspire AS1410 Series. These new notebooks integrate enough power for enjoying digital entertainment in a very sleek, stylish design for just $399.

“With the rising popularity of social networking, consumers are more connected than ever to the online world,” said Ray Sawall, senior manager of product marketing for Acer America. “When it comes to selecting a notebook, they’re increasingly concerned with size, weight and style. The AS1410 Series is small enough to be carried in a backpack or even a large purse but with enough power for spreadsheets and presentations. Aggressively priced, the AS1410 is an affordable mobile solution for checking Twitter updates, viewing YouTube videos and handling productivity applications on a plane, at school or a coffee house. Those in the market for a netbook should consider this notebook as an option, due to the step up in processing power.”

Just one-inch-thin and 3.08 pounds, these systems are sleek and light, but with a full-size keyboard. The full-sized keyboard is comfortable and easy to type on, particularly for taking advantage of productivity applications. The compact size combined with a traditional keyboard comprises a convenient platform for frequent travelers and students. With the needs of mobile users in mind, the AS1410 Series is designed to suit an individual’s own personal flair with three elegant color options – Diamond Black, Sapphire Blue and Ruby Red.

Powerful Performance; Petite Package

Although it’s the size of a netbook, the Aspire AS1410 Series is truly a mainstream notebook with the performance to suit a variety of users. Featuring an Intel® Celeron® processor and 2GB DDR2 memory (upgradeable to 4GB), the notebooks have plenty of power for document creation, media playback and daily task management.

The systems are also outfitted with the new Windows 7 Home Premium operating system and up to a 250GB hard drive,(1) which is large enough to store a vast library of music, images and spreadsheets. Offering plenty of productive time when away from a power outlet, a 6-cell Lithium Ion battery provides up to a whopping six hours of battery life,(2)enough power to keep the PC charged on a coast to coast flight.

The systems are also primed for visual clarity. The 11.6-inch widescreen HD LED-backlit display is large enough to comfortably view videos, photos, documents and web pages. Featuring LED backlit technology, a 16:9 aspect ratio and Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD, the AS1410 Series delivers realistic HD pictures with crisp detail and smooth video playback.

Integrated speakers and Dolby® Sound Room® audio enhancement deliver lifelike sound for enjoying videos, movie downloads and music. A webcam and digital microphone make it fun and easy to get virtual face time with friends and family via live video streaming and video chat.

Intuitive PC Navigation, Convenient Connectivity

Affording easy, intuitive PC navigation, the new Aspire notebooks have a multi-gesture touchpad. Users can scroll, zoom in and out and quickly flip through web pages, photos, spreadsheets and more by pinching, flicking and swirling their fingers across the touchpad.

Despite the compact form factor, the new notebooks offer a wide array of ports including an integrated multi-in-one media reader to conveniently transfer files from digital devices. An HDMI port allows the systems to support any PC or TV video format via a single cable, while three USB 2.0 ports enable connection to the latest peripherals and digital devices. Advanced Intel 802.11a/b/g/Draft-N Wireless and Gigabit Ethernet LAN enable fast access to email, the web and social networks.

Apple brings back Newton designer, defines irony

249258227_4e4710db66That fact that Apple has rehired Michael Tchao, one of the original Newton developers, is likely to stir up stories and posts about the Apple tablet. But the man has had a storied past in the CE field and Apple might have brought him back on board after a 15 year hiatus just because of his impressive resume. Or they need help on the Apple tablet marketing. Actually, that’s probably exactly why Apple needs him back.

Most recently he was the general manager of Nike Techlabs where the Nike+ products originated. Michael Tchao’s new role will be VP of Product Marketing at Apple.

The NY Times,

“He’s got the scars and the great ideas” about tablet computing, said another former Apple employee who worked with Mr. Tchao. He did not want to be named because the hiring was not yet public.

Here’s how you market an Apple tablet: produce a relativity inexpensive touchscreen device that has an app store, webcam, and incredible battery life and have Steve Jobs tell a room full of gadget nerds to buy it. Most will and then will spread the gospel to the masses. Then have Justin Long tell everyone to buy it and of course more will. It’s that easy.

magic, you’ve got access to a world of music – Internet radio, your
personal music collection including DRM-free iTunes Plus downloads, and
subscription services such as Napster®, Pandora®, Rhapsody®, SIRIUS®, and
Last.fm™. And the Squeezebox Radio’s color screen can display album art,
track and station information, visualizers and more.

With six preset buttons located on the side of display, at the touch of a
button the Squeezebox Radio makes it easy to enjoy your favorite song,
Internet radio station or playlist. With automatic brightness adjustment
and a built-in alarm clock, the Logitech Squeezebox Radio is even ideal for
your bedside table. And if you want to listen to music in private, a 3.5 mm

extra speakers required – thanks to the 3/4-inch high-definition, soft-dome
tweeter and 3-inch high-power, long-throw woofer.

For your convenience, a rechargeable battery pack that is sold separately
will let you move the Squeezebox Radio around your home without
interrupting the music. The battery can power your Squeezebox Radio for up
to six hours and recharges automatically when it’s plugged in.

Logitech Squeezebox Touch – Color Touch Screen Puts Music at Your
Fingertips

So you can seamlessly discover a world of music and play it through the
stereo system you already own, the Logitech Squeezebox Touch Wi-Fi music
player has a stunning 4.3-inch color touch screen that lets you easily

Simply plug in the Squeezebox Touch to your existing speakers, connect to
your home network and you’re ready to rock out. An included USB port and SD
card slot on the back of the Squeezebox Touch also lets you access music
and photos stored on flash drives and memory cards.

To put control within reach, a wall-mount bracket (sold separately) lets
you put your Squeezebox Touch at eye level – near the stereo, over your
kitchen table or wherever you want convenient control of your music. With
the optional Logitech Squeezebox Touch Wall-Mount Bracket, the power cord
and speaker wires can be run inside your walls so cords or cables aren’t
dangling from your Squeezebox.

The intuitive Squeezebox interface was designed for speed and convenience.
The color display found on the Squeezebox Radio and Squeezebox Touch help
you quickly locate your favorite radio stations, playlists or music
services. And, with its redesigned menu system, you can easily choose from
a variety of applications to enhance your listening experience.
Plus, if you’re a Facebook fan, you can share music recommendations, as
well as check out your friends’ statuses, recommendations, and full-color

Premium Guitar Hero drum controller from Logitech

drums

Logitech has announced a premium Guitar Hero drumset for the PS2 and PS3, priced at $229 and available soon. The kit features a stainless steel bass pedal and the drumheads and cymbals can be repositioned “to fit your reach and suit your style, helping you play faster and better.”

Without having actually seen the set, it looks like it’s maybe a step or two up from the set that’s included with GH World Tour but perhaps not as nice as, say, the ION kit that’s available for Rock Band. That one goes for $300, though.

Of course, this all begs the question: why no Xbox 360 or Wii versions as well?

Feel the Beat: Logitech Unveils Premium Drum Controller for Guitar Hero

Logitech Wireless Drum Controller Licensed for the PLAYSTATION 3 Computer Entertainment System

FREMONT, Calif. – July 15, 2009 – So you can really rock out to Guitar Hero® on the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3) computer entertainment system, Logitech (SIX: LOGN) (NASDAQ: LOGI) today introduced the Logitech® Wireless Drum Controller for the PLAYSTATION 3 system. Licensed by Activision Publishing, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATVI), for the award-winning Guitar Hero franchise, the Wireless Drum Controller features premium drum heads with recessed rims – making it easy for you to play like a rock star.
“When you’re ready to experience a new premium drum controller or expand your band, you’ll want to rip on Logitech’s new drum controller,” said Ruben Mookerjee, Logitech’s director of product marketing for gaming. “With the Wireless Drum Controller, you can mark time, keep the backbeat, color up your riffs and crash down on the cymbal pads. Joining the Logitech® Wireless Guitar Controller, the new Wireless Drum Controller lets you rock out to your favorite songs on the PS3 system.”

The Logitech Wireless Drum Controller features three fully adjustable drum heads and two cymbal pads. Each piece can be positioned to fit your reach and suit your style. Offering a unique playing experience, the new Logitech Wireless Drum Controller provides quiet, responsive heads that deliver a lively feel, won’t distract you from the music, and are designed to let you take advantage of all the latest features of Guitar Hero games.
But Logitech did not just replicate typical drum heads. The recessed rims help make it easier to score points and avoid accidental rim shots. The kick pedal uses a stainless steel surface and an adjustable spring – providing a highly durable, responsive drumming experience.

Delivering up to 50 hours of battery life on two AA batteries, the Wireless Drum Controller gives you enough juice to perform a concert’s worth of hits, encores included.

Compatible with the PS3 system as well as the PlayStation®2 system, the Wireless Drum Controller uses a 2.4 GHz wireless USB receiver, so the connection is as steady as a drum beat. When you’re ready to play, the Logitech Wireless Drum Controller sets up quickly and folds flat in seconds. You can start playing within minutes of opening the box and when the show is over, the set can be easily stowed away. (Roadies are not required.)

Pricing and Availability

The Logitech Wireless Drum Controller for the PS3 system is expected to be available in the U.S. beginning in July and Europe beginning in August for a suggested retail price of $229.99 (U.S.).

So, you want to be a Gmail ninja?

If you got 100 new messages, how long would it take you to get through them all? An hour? Five minutes? How would you find the important ones, reply to the ones that require an immediate reply, and mark the ones that you needed to take care of later? Would you use stars, filters, keyboard shortcuts, labels? What about Gmail Labs like tasks or canned responses?

Everybody has their own system for managing email, but some are definitely more efficient than others. Even if you only get a few messages a day, there are probably some simple things you can do to make it easier to get through your inbox and maybe even have a little fun along the way. We know time is valuable, so we asked lots of Googlers for their tips and tricks on how they make the most of Gmail, and we combined the best of these into a guide at www.gmail.com/tips, cheekily entitled "Become a Gmail Ninja." The tips are categorized into ninja belts (white, green, black and master ) based on how much mail you get each day.

For a handy reference that you can pin to your wall or keep on your desk, we even made a printable version of the guide where all the tips fit on one page front and back. And for the first 1024 of you who want them, we'll send a limited-edition, laminated guide for free. Just fill out this form with your address. Sorry, we can only ship to addresses in the US. If you're not one of the lucky 1024, you can still buy a laminated guide at www.barcharts.com/gmail.

If you're already a Gmail ninja and have your own tips you'd like to share, let us know and we'll add the best ones to the online guide.

*Our lawyers asked us to make sure it was clear that your contact information won't be maintained longer than necessary to send you the laminated guide and that this offer is "void where prohibited and only while supplies last."
