AT&T confirms they’ll get Android phones from Motorola, HTC, and Dell in first half of 2010

This page just went live over on AT&T's site. While it doesn't give a whole lot of specifics, it does confirm that we'll be seeing no less than three Android handset hit AT&T's shelves sometime in the first six months of this year.

CrunchGear meet-up: Seattle edition

seattlemeetup
Hey, fellow Seattleites — want to grab a beer? Thought so. A nice little Seattle meet-up has been a long time coming. We had that one McLeod Residence, but man, that was like a year ago. It’s time to get together again, and next Wednesday is looking good. And this time, we’re bringing friends. I’m the only CG guy coming, but a few of those other bloggers from Gizmodo, Crave, and TechFlash will be there, and there might even be a few giveaways.

We’ll be at Cyclops in Belltown on Wednesday, probably in the later evening but I’ll update next week with specifics. Note that this is an over-21 gathering! Sorry kids, next time I promise we’ll just do 40s in the park.

No need to RSVP, but check back on Tuesday to be sure of the timing and venue. Looking forward to seeing you guys.

RED Scarlet gets specs and release window

1259652458
The RED Scarlet, if you don’t know, is a compact professional camera being released by RED as a more portable alternative to the more full-featured modular system that’s been brewing for so long. Key word here is professional! Many are under the impression that this is their consumer offering, but RED is not a consumer-oriented company. The Scarlet may be cheaper and more compact, but it is still an extremely serious camera and creates footage that a layperson would have trouble editing. That said, this thing looks pretty bad-ass, and I might have to go halvesies on it with a certain RED owner who’s on a trip to Poland right now. Yeah, you know who you are.

We heard about some of this stuff about a month ago, but these specifics are good to have.

It’s being offered with a fixed 8x zoom or an regular interchangeable mount; the spec sheet actually doesn’t note the F values of the lens, which suggests it’s not finalized. I’d guess it’ll be T/2.8 or thereabouts. There are a lot of specs and modes listed in the announcement which you can read there, but the price is quoted at $4750 at the moment for the fixed lens and $2750 for the brain only. The fixed lens version comes with an LCD, battery, and other accessories however, so for a filmmaker on a budget it might be a good unit. Plus, everything about it is compatible with the Epic modules, so you’re not wasting money on two different systems if you’re going for both.

There are other devices outlined as well — a new pro Redmote, the Red Ray Professional, and others. Head on over to the announcement thread to get the whole story.

Mmm… I’m liking the look of those new primes.

Dell shows off the Adamo XPS

adamo5
Dell is finally letting some folks play with the previously super secret Adamo XPS. Hardware specifics are still a mystery although we now know it’s not powered by an Atom CPU. Apparently everyone digs the previously-mentioned capacitive strip that opens the lid all sexy-like. Head over to LaptopMag to peek a few pics until we can post our hands-on.

Price drops this year for both 360 and PS3, says infallible source

sony-playstation-3
Apparently there is a single guy who is intimately acquainted with the internal doings of both Microsoft and Sony. Double agent? Contractor? Seducer? Nobody knows but Ars Technica, who enjoy exclusive access to his oracular expectorations. Er, his tech predictions. It looks like both the PS3 and 360 are due for a price drop, via the Tetris effect, which I have just now invented. It’s where products are stacked on top of each other, and once you score on the bottom, that row of products disappears and is replaced by the one above it. Apple does it year after year with the iPhone, and now it looks like console makers are about to do it again as well.

360 Elites will be replacing the Pro at the $300 level, after Pro inventory has been reduced via bundle deals. Makes sense, especially when you consider that a new 360 offering (with Project Natal) will be coming out in 2010, taking up that premium slot.

As for the PS3, we all know it’s been due for a price drop for a long time,if not since launch, and now with that slim PS3 on the way, it’s time to crush the prices a bit and get rid of the bottom row. The mole didn’t give any specifics, but I’m guessing they’ll be phasing out the lower-end system and replacing it at around that price with the 160GB version.

Of course, we get rumors like this all the time, but this guy is supposed to have a pretty good track record. We can’t count on Microsoft and Sony to confirm anything (since deception is their natural state), and we can also ignore anything they say in the negative, since they blatantly lie about that stuff too. Might it actually be time for me to move up from my Dreamcast to a current console?
