When 10 hubs is just too few, and 24 is a few too many, and 80 is way too many… have I got the USB hub for you! They just added these things to stock at ThinkGeek, and unlike the other hubs we’ve seen recently, this one actually looks pretty nice. It’s got kind of an Apple vibe, but obviously still ran run with the PC big boys on sheer geekiness.
Thing is, it costs $160. Personally… I’d rather buy myself a nice steak every night for a week. Or teriyaki every day for a month. Yeah, I’m going with that one. But if you can’t control your buying finger, go ahead and pick one up.

If you saw the post yesterday about the 10-port USB hub and thought to yourself, “We’re getting there but I still need MORE!” then here’s your answer. It’s a 24-port USB hub. If 24 ports isn’t enough for you then I give up.
This one’s a $70 affair, which seems like a lot for a USB hub until you remember that you’ve now got 24 ports to work with. It actually doesn’t look that insanely large, either.

Would you make a monitor that had a fake arm sticking out of it, brandishing a knife at the viewer? I would, too, but we would never sell any because people find that sort of thing scary. I don’t know why. But whatever the reason, it’s the same as why they’d be afraid of this Apuri USB hub from Roccat. It looks like a tripodal scorpion ready to thrust its barb into your hand should you attempt to unplug that thumbdrive.
I try to make my computer look as menacing as possible, so guests aren’t tempted to tamper with it, so I might have to get one of these. The sting is actually for your mouse cord to travel over, so it doesn’t drag all over your desk, catching pens and flinging them down for your pet to gnaw on. I can’t overstate how skeptical I am of that feature working as advertised (though I’d love to be surprised), and besides, if you’ve got enough cord between it and the mouse to let it move freely, wouldn’t that necessitate the hub being rather far back on your desk?
Well, it looks cool, at least. If it seems like the kind of thing you’d like, pick one up here for $57. Yeah, kind of steep for a USB hub, but everyone loves a freaky looking gadget, right? Well, you and I do.

Oh, I know now. It reminds me of that thing.

Now THIS, my friends, is a mod. An enterprising Finnish fellow has gutted a super old Mobira Talkman cell phone kit and installed a home theater PC inside of it. That’s impressive, yes, but what’s more impressive is that he fit a USB hub, Wi-Fi card, sound card, and a 128×128 OLED screen into the handset. Oh, and it works for VOIP calls to boot.

The project took about 40 hours to complete, so you could conceivably build something similar over a caffeine- and nicotine-infused weekend. You’d have to then take a few days off to actually enjoy the fruits of your labor, though.

Check out the full write-up at Metku.net — plenty more photos as well.

Here’s a four-port USB hub from Elecom that comes with magnetic backing and hooks for easy mounting on most surfaces. It retails for $40. I want one. Don’t you?

Because Mac users need hard drives more than Windows users. Seagate announced some brand spankin’ new external drives today that include the FreeAgent Go Drive for Mac w/ USB, FreeAgent Go Pro for Mac, a 2TB FreeAgent Desk for Mac and the FreeAgent Go Dock+. The dock is actually really cool.
So, the FreAgent Go Drive ditches the FireWire port in favor of a USB 2.0 interface. A 250GB drive will cost you $100, a 320GB for $120 and $150 for a 500GB drive.
The Go Pro sports a FireWire 800 or 400 connections. The 250GB goes for $130 while the 320GB and 500GB retail for $150 and $190, respectively.
The 2TB FreeAgent Desk is the same as before but with extra storage. It will retail for $340.
What I thought was the best part of this announcement is the Go Dock+. The old FreeAgent Dock for FreeAgent drives has been updated with three USB ports turning it into a USB hub. It’s kind of cool if you have a FreeAgent drive and retails for $40.
