Wow. I thought Modern Warfare 2’s night vision goggles made for a pretty special edition, but this edition of Enemy Zero, a mediocre Sega Saturn game, is the specialest of them all. The crate it comes in? Not a novelty crate! It’s the smallest container they could find that would hold all the wonderful things they wanted to give you.

So what exactly is in this cornucopia of survival horror ephemera? Well, in addition to the “normal” special edition of the game, you get shirts, a promotional costume they used at shows, a replica of the gun from the game, a VHS tape of the game’s music (?!), and about 500 other things.
It was put up on Yahoo! Auctions in Japan, and sold for… are you ready for this? It was sold for 300,000¥, or around $3300. Mother of god! Even a mint copy of Radiant Silvergun will only go for a few hundred!

Well this is no fun. If you’ve been patiently waiting for the Vizio HDTVs that bring Twiiter, Facebook, Netflix, and Yahoo into you living room, you’re going to have to wait a bit longer. Santa isn’t going to bring one this year.
The HDTV sets were supposed to be out in July, but that obviously didn’t happen. CNET is reporting that the new launch date is January 2010. Too bad that Vizio couldn’t make the original deadline. We’ll no doubt see other HDTVs at CES ‘10 with similar social-networking functions. Vizio might get lost in the crowd.

Before there was an iPhone, Android and App Store, there was Yahoo! Go. Launched in 2006, Yahoo! Go was an application offered news, mail, weather, traffic, and Yahoo! search from a mobile device. Today, Yahoo is announcing that Yahoo! Go will be shutdown on January 12, 2010.
The app seemed to be ahead of it's time when it launched but now is useless thanks to Yahoo creating prettier, more powerful, personal content-focused apps that specialize in products, such as Flickr, Yahoo Finance and Yahoo Messenger. Yahoo released three versions of Yahoo! Go but hasn't released a new version in the past year. The last iteration of the app included a mobile widget platform and was available on select Nokia and Windows Mobile devices

A Pew Internet & American Life study has refuted the idea that use of the Internet necessarily leads to decreased social isolation. Quite the opposite!, yelled a character in a Charles Dickens novel. It turns out that as people continually use things like Twitter, Facebook, and the like, they’re both expanding their social circle and increasing contact with said circle.
The old way of thinking was that spending all day on the computer would come at the expense of maintaining meaningful human contact. Can’t talk to someone about The Issues of the Day online, right? (Wrong, but whatever.)
Some bullet points, because those are easy to write:
• People who use mobile phones have a 12 percent larger discussion circle (people you talk to about Important Stuff) than non-mobile users
• The diversity of a person’s “core network” is 25 percent larger for mobile phone users, and 15 percent larger for basic Internet users
• People who use social networks tend to have “real” social networks that are more diverse than people who don’t
• Internet users are no less likely to have a chat with their neighbor than someone who doesn’t use the Internet all that much
You can read the full study here, or, like me, just be content with the executive summary. My interest in social networks died some time ago, but hooray for all the folks out there who keep bringing the thunder.

The long rumored deal between giants Microsoft and Yahoo was due to come to its final stage yesterday. However, reports have said that putting pen to paper to finalize the deal, has been put on hold for the time being. Microsoft and Yahoo have told the SEC in a filing that they are forced to delay the final stage of their deal. When the deal was officially announced on July 29 this year, the promise was that Yahoo and Microsoft would finish negotiating the search deal by October 27. Read full story...
